About the Ramayana :- The Ramayana (रामायण) is one of the two great Sanskrit epics of ancient India, alongside the Mahabharata. Composed by the sage Valmiki, it is often called the Adi Kavya — the first poem ever written in human history. With approximately 24,000 verses divided into 6 Kandas (books), it tells the story of Prince Rama of Ayodhya, his exile, the abduction of his wife Sita, and the great war to rescue her. But the Ramayana is far more than a story of war and rescue. It is the ultimate guide to dharma — righteous living. Rama embodies the ideal son, husband, king, and warrior. Sita represents unwavering devotion and inner strength. Hanuman demonstrates the power of selfless service and bhakti. Lakshmana shows the beauty of brotherly loyalty. Each character in this epic is a living lesson in how to navigate the complexities of life with grace, courage, and moral clarity. The teachings of the Ramayana directly connect to the wisdom found in the Bhagavad Gita and the Vedas. The concept of dharma that Krishna explains in the Gita is the same dharma that Rama lives and breathes throughout this epic.

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v1

उपास्य रात्रिशेषं तु शोणाकूले महर्षिभिः |

निशायां सुप्रभातायां विश्वामित्रोऽभ्यभाषत || १-३५-१

On sojourning the remaining night on the bank of river Sona along with great-sages, Viswamitra spoke when that night is elapsing into a sunny daybreak. [1-35-1]

रात के शेष भाग में शोणा नदी के तट पर महर्षियों के साथ निवास करके, जब रात्रि बीत गई और प्रभात हुआ, तब विश्वामित्र बोले।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v2

सुप्रभाता निशा राम पूर्वा संध्या प्रवर्तते |

उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भद्रं ते गमनायाभिरोचय || १-३५-२

"Oh, Rama, night fared into a sunny morning, eastern day-spring is set in, hence awake and arise, you be safe, ready yourself for further travel." [1-35-2]

यह श्लोक कहता है कि रात बीत गई है और सुबह हो गई है। उठो, तुम्हारा कल्याण हो, यात्रा के लिए तैयार हो जाओ।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v3

तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य कृत्वा पौर्वाह्णिकक्रियः |

गमनं रोचयामास वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह || १-३५-३

On hearing the words of Sage Vishvamitra, Rama woke up and on completion of morning time religious activities he readied himself for further journey and indeed spoke this sentence to the sage. [1-35-3]

यह सुनकर और प्रातःकालीन नित्यकर्म पूरा करके, उसने जाने का निश्चय किया और यह वाक्य कहा।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v4

अयं शोणः शुभजलोऽगाधः पुलिनमण्डितः |

कतरेण पथा ब्रह्मन् संतरिष्यामहे वयम् || १-३५-४

"This River Sona is with auspicious waters and even adorned with dunes, where it is so deep. Oh, Brahman, in which of the two ways, namely by fordless waters or by fordable water with dunes, we have to cross this river?" [1-35-4]

यह सोन नदी शुभ जल वाली, गहरी और रेत के किनारों से सुशोभित है। हे ब्रह्मन्, हम किस मार्ग से इसे पार करेंगे?

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v5

एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण विश्वामित्रोऽब्रवीदिदम् |

एष पंथा मयोद्दिष्टो येन यान्ति महर्षयः || १-३५-५

When Rama spoke to him thus sage Vishvamitra replied, "I propose the same route by which these great sages are going. [1-35-5]

विश्वामित्र ने राम से कहा, "यह वही मार्ग है जिसे मैंने बताया है, जिस पर महान ऋषि चलते हैं।"

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v6

एवमुक्त्वा महर्षयो विश्वमित्रेण धीमता |

पश्यन्तस्ते प्रयाता वै वनानि विविधानि च || १-३५-६

Thus spoken by that astute Sage Vishvamitra, the other great sages travelled on, indeed beholding diverse forests and their environs. [1-35-6]

यह सुनकर, बुद्धिमान महर्षि विश्वामित्र के साथ विविध वनों को देखते हुए चले गए।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v7

ते गत्वा दूरमध्वानं गतेऽर्धदिवसे तदा |

जाह्नवीं सरितां श्रेष्ठां ददृशुर्मुनिसेविताम् || १-३५-७

On going a distance on their way, and after a lapse of half a day, then they perceived the prominent one among rivers and the one adored by sages, namely River Ganga. [1-35-7]

वे बहुत दूर तक यात्रा करके, दिन के आधे समय में, ऋषियों द्वारा पूजित श्रेष्ठ नदी गंगा को देखा।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v8

तां दृष्ट्वा पुण्यसलिलां हंससारससेविताम् |

बभूवुर्मुनयः सर्वे मुदिताः सहराघवाः || १-३५-८

On seeing River Ganga with her pious waters and adored by swans and saarasa waterfowls, all the sages felt delighted together with both of the Raghava-s, namely Rama and Lakshmana. [1-35-8]

उस पुण्यसलिला, हंस-सारस से सेवित नदी को देखकर, सभी मुनि राम के साथ अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v9

तस्यास्तीरे तदा सर्वे चक्रुर्वासपरिग्रहम् |

ततः स्नात्वा यथान्यायं संतर्प्य पितृदेवताः || १-३५-९

हुत्वा चैवाग्निहोत्राणि प्राश्य चामृतवद्धविः |

विविशुर्जाह्नवीतीरे शुभा मुदितमानसाः || १-३५-१०

विश्वामित्रं महात्मानं परिवार्य समंततः |

Then they sojourned on the riverbank of Ganga, and next on taking bath in Ganga they have customarily offered that river's water as oblations to their manes. After that, on enkindling the ritual-fire they have also offered fire-oblations into it for gods. Later, dining on their part of those ambrosian oblations with which they have oblated the fire, those sages perched on the propitious banks of Ganga, surrounding the great-souled Vishvamitra from all sides, to the contentment of their heart in having performed religious chores on the riverbank of Ganga. [1-35-9, 10, 11a]

नदी के किनारे उन सभी ने निवास स्थान बनाया। फिर विधिपूर्वक स्नान करके, पितरों और देवताओं को तृप्त कर, और अग्निहोत्र करके, अमृत के समान हविष्य का सेवन कर, वे सब प्रसन्न मन से गंगा के तट पर प्रवेश कर गए और महात्मा विश्वामित्र को चारों ओर से घेर लिया।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v10

विष्टिताश्च यथान्यायं राघवौ च यथा अर्हम् |

संप्रहृष्टमना रामो विश्वामित्रमथाब्रवीत् || १-३५-११

When sages are sitting at ease then even Rama and Lakshmana sat down according to their admissibility and custom of sitting before their teachers, and then Rama highly gladdened at heart has spoken to Vishvamitra. [1-35-11]

विश्वामित्र के द्वारा बताए गए नियमों के अनुसार, राम ने उचित आदर सत्कार के साथ विश्वामित्र से प्रसन्न मन से कहा।

भगवन् श्रोतुमिच्छामि गङ्गां त्रिपथगां नदीम् |

त्रैलोक्यं कथमाक्रम्य गता नदनदीपतिम् || १-३५-१२

"Oh, godly sage, I wish to listen about Ganga, the river that has a trinal course, and as to how she is reaching the husband of rivulets and rivers, namely the ocean, on pervading all the three worlds." Thus Rama asked Vishvamitra. [1-35-12]

हे भगवन, मैं त्रिपथगामिनी गंगा नदी के बारे में सुनना चाहता हूँ। यह नदी तीनों लोकों में कैसे फैली और सागर तक पहुँची, कृपया मुझे बताएँ।

चोदितो रामवाक्येन विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः |

वृद्धिं जन्म च गंगाया वक्तुमेवोपचक्रमे || १-३५-१३

Motivated by Rama's words the eminent-sage Vishvamitra commenced to narrate about the emergence and that way even about the progression of River Ganga. [1-35-13]

विश्वामित्र महामुनि राम के कहने पर गंगा के उद्गम और वृद्धि के विषय में बताने लगे।

शैलेन्द्रो हिमवान् राम धातूनामाकरो महान् |

तस्य कन्याद्वयं राम रूपेणाप्रतिमं भुवि || १-३५-१४

"The lordly mountain Himavan who is the greatest treasure trove of minerals, Rama, also treasures up a pair of daughters who by their comeliness are unequalled on earth. [1-35-14]

हे राम, महान हिमवान पर्वत धातुओं का खजाना है। उसकी दो पुत्रियाँ पृथ्वी पर रूप में अतुलनीय थीं।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v14

या मेरुदुहिता राम तयोर्माता सुमध्यमा |

नाम्ना मेना मनोज्ञा वै पत्नी हिमवतः प्रिया || १-३५-१५

"The slender-waisted and fascinating daughter of Mt. Meru, oh, Rama, renowned by her name Mena, is the dear wife of Himavan and the mother of those two daughters, indeed. [1-35-15]

हे राम, मेरु की पुत्री (पार्वती) की माता, सुंदर जंघाओं वाली, जिसका नाम मैना है और जो मन को मोहने वाली है, वह हिमवान की प्रिय पत्नी है।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v15

तस्यां गंगेयमभवज्ज्येष्ठा हिमवतः सुता |

उमा नाम द्वितीयाभूत्कन्या तस्यैव राघव || १-३५-१६

"This Ganga has emerged as an elder daughter to Himavan through Mena, oh, Raghava, and that way a girl renowned by the name Uma has become a second daughter to him. [1-35-16]

हिमालया की पुत्री गंगा सबसे बड़ी थीं। हे राम, उसी हिमालया की दूसरी कन्या का नाम उमा हुआ।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v16

अथ ज्येष्ठां सुराः सर्वे देवकार्यचिकीर्षया |

शैलेन्द्रं वरयामासुर्गंगां त्रिपथगां नदीम् || १-३५-१७

"Later, all of the divinities intending to fulfil a divine purpose have sought the lordly mountain Himavan to spare Ganga, who is scheduled to become a tri-way-cruising river. [1-35-17]

सभी देवताओं ने देव कार्य करने की इच्छा से, तीन लोकों में बहने वाली नदी गंगा को पर्वतों के राजा हिमालय से वरदान के रूप में माँगा।

ददौ धर्मेण हिमवांस्तनयां लोकपावनीम् |

स्वच्छंदपथगां गंगां त्रैलोक्यहितकाम्यया || १-३५-१८

"With a righteous thinking and hopeful of the welfare in triadic world, Himavan then spared his daughter Ganga whose flow is at her own volition. [1-35-18]

हिमालय ने लोकपावनी गंगा को अपनी पुत्री के रूप में दिया। वह तीनों लोकों के कल्याण की इच्छा से स्वच्छंद रूप से विचरण करती हैं।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v18

प्रतिगृह्य त्रिलोकार्थं त्रिलोकहितकांक्षिणः |

गंगामादाय तेऽगच्छन् कृतार्थेनान्तरात्मना || १-३५-१९

"Those divinities who are the well-wishers of the well-being of tri-world welcomed Ganga, who is incidentally intended for the purpose of the tri-world, and they came back to heaven fetching Ganga with them, with a heartfelt joy for their purpose is fulfilled. [1-35-19]

तीनों लोकों का कल्याण चाहने वाले वे (राजा) तीनों लोकों के लिए गंगा को लेकर संतुष्ट मन से लौट आए।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v19

या चान्या शैलदुहिता कन्यासीद्रघुनंदन |

उग्रं सा व्रतमास्थाय तपस्तेपे तपोधना || १-३५-२०

"The other daughter of Himavanta, oh, Raghu's descendent, that unmarried girl namely Uma, she performed a rigorous sacrament taking hold of a supreme devoutness as her ascesis itself is her wealth. [1-35-20]

रघुनंदन! जो अन्य पर्वतराज की कन्याएँ थीं, उन्होंने भी घोर तपस्या का मार्ग अपनाकर महान तप किया।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v20

उग्रेण तपसा युक्तां ददौ शैलवरः सुताम् |

रुद्रायाप्रतिरूपाय उमां लोकनमस्कृताम् || १-३५-२१

"As for Uma who is unified with her rigorous sacrament and who is adored by all the world, that best one among mountains Himavanta gave such a daughter to the unique god Rudra. [1-35-21]

पर्वतराज ने घोर तपस्या से युक्त, संसार द्वारा पूजित, अद्वितीय रुद्र को अपनी पुत्री उमा प्रदान की।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v21

एते ते शैलराजस्य सुते लोकनमस्कृते |

गंगा च सरितां श्रेष्ठा उमादेवी च राघव || १-३५-२२

"Oh, Raghava, the prominent one among rivers namely Ganga and Uma Devi as well, these are the two daughters of the king of mountains that are highly revered by the world. [1-35-22]

यह श्लोक हिमालय पर्वतराज की दो पुत्रियों का वर्णन करता है, जिनका लोक सम्मान करता है। वे हैं गंगा, जो नदियों में श्रेष्ठ हैं, और उमा देवी।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v22

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथा त्रिपथगामिनी |

खं गता प्रथमं तात गतिं गतिमतां वर || १-३५-२३

"Dear boy Rama with beautiful gait, as to how the triply coursing Ganga has cruised to heaven in the first phase, I have related all about that cruise to you. [1-35-23]

हे पुत्र, जैसे त्रिपथगामिनी (गंगा) ने पहले स्वर्ग में गति प्राप्त की, उसी प्रकार तुम्हें भी यह सब बताया गया है।

Bala Kanda – Sarga 35 · v23

सैषा सुरनदी रम्या शैलेन्द्रतनया तदा |

सुरलोकं समारूढा विपापा जलवाहिनी || १-३५-२४

"As such, that marvellous and sinless daughter of the lordly mountain Himavanta, ever-flowing in the form of water, ascended to the abode of divinities and became devaganga , Divine River. [1-35-24]

यह सुंदर देव नदी, जो पर्वतों के राजा की पुत्री है, तब पापों से मुक्त होकर स्वर्ग लोक को सुशोभित करने वाली जलधारा के रूप में प्रवाहित हुई।
